Departures board · a working weekday
Your job sets the departures. Side work catches the crossing in between.
Ferry Bell is a small reference for people adding a second, smaller income to a full-time job. We don't sell courses, tools or coaching. A working week already runs to a timetable: the commute, the shift, dinner, the school run. We look at where side work fits between those fixed departures, and how long you really need at each end to tie up.
The crossing
Ninety minutes on the timetable. About an hour of actual work.
On paper, the evening above has a ninety-minute gap between dinner and the last boat. In practice, boarding and tying up take time at both ends: opening the laptop, finding where you left off, answering one message, then closing down so you can sleep. That's often twenty or thirty minutes gone.
Planning side work around the real crossing time, not the gap on the timetable, keeps promises to clients realistic and stops the last boat being missed every night.
Timetable notes
How different side work handles a short crossing.
Some work can start and stop within one crossing. Some needs a longer sailing, or keeps arriving after the last boat has gone. We leave pay out on purpose: rates vary too much by country and platform to print honestly.
| Work | Shortest useful crossing | Tie-up time | Arrives after the last boat? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Simple online tasks | 20 min | Low | No |
| Listing items for sale | 30 min | Low | Sometimes, buyer questions |
| Proofreading or editing | 60 min | Medium | Rarely, deadlines are set |
| Design for clients | 90 min | High | Often, revision requests |
| Customer messages for a shop | Fixed shift | Low | Yes, unless hours are agreed |

What can cancel a crossing.
- FEES
The rate isn't what arrives.
Platforms and payment services keep a share. Read the fee page before you start.
- TAX
Small amounts still count.
Side income is usually taxable. Keep a plain record from the first payment and check your tax authority's rules.
- FATIGUE
Late nights add up.
Side work that eats into sleep comes back as mistakes at the day job. Protect your rest first.
- CONTRACT
Your employer may have a say.
Some employment contracts limit outside or competing work. Read yours and ask HR about anything unclear.
- FRAUD
Offers that cost you to start.
Anyone asking for a fee, a kit purchase or help moving money isn't offering work. Walk away and report it.
